Today was spent mostly writing a paper with Sienna. I would walk back and forth on the deck and she would write what I said, adding and altering to make the paper beautiful and informative. This went on for hours, only stopping for food and the sunset. We stayed up into the wee hours of the night working on our paper and presentation. When it was finally completed and turned in, we talked about life then parted ways and went to bed. Not a very eventful day, but a full day nonetheless. Haiku time:
Cleaner wrasse paper. Shaping into elegance. Takes so freaking long.

To anyone who is new to filming with a GoPro, a few words of advice: HOLD STILL!!!!! Going through over an hour of shaky video footage today with Sienna would have been so much more bearable if, during filming, we had 1: Gotten closer to the wrasse and 2: Tried to film without whipping the camera through the water like it was a fly rod. Sometimes, we couldn't even find the wrasse we were supposedly filming because we were too far away and the footage was too shaky. Despite all our cinematic shortcomings, Edd was still able to get this absolute gem of a shot: After sifting through footage for hours and synthesizing it all into an excel worksheet, it was time to take a break. I took a glorious hour nap. When I woke up, it was lunchtime. Lunch was delicious sandwich wraps with coleslaw and fruit on the side. It was a nice break from the tedious project work.
It took Sienna and I pretty much the rest of the day to get some meaningful charts made up from the data. This is probably due to our procrastination, but I like to think it's because we are such great partners and we tend to get lost in good conversation. Either way, we are pretty close to having the project finished. During dinner I pretty much interrogated Edd about what scientists do, how science works, and what an academic path looks like for a science student. Though I missed out on some (not all) of the great stories and laughter, I was able to achieve a greater picture of exactly what my experience in science will look like. After talking with Edd I now have a greater appreciation for my professors and a better idea of what I will be doing for the next couple of years. I couldn't be more excited! Haiku time: Long GoPro Footage. Data analysis now, then, plan for future. |
