5/27 CoralWatch,’Cards, Hanna cheating, peeing on Colt, Studying fish frantically. Day three has been pretty eventful. A few of us slept in today and that was very nice. We have been going nonstop, action, action, action. It doesn’t quite dawn on you that it has been like that until we have lecture or it’s after 8:30. One of my goals is to start going to sleep early so that I can wake up early and see the stars right before the sunset. Also don’t want to get back into bad sleeping habits like I was all of last semester. Will do my best to not go to sleep at midnight anymore. Today we spent a lot of time learning about coral. We got to go out into beautiful coral, making sure not lose our buddies like usual, and work with CoralWatch. We used their somewhat easy to use website and coral card to identify corals and out information into a system to help coral surveys around the world. I like nonprofits, but I feel like some of them may not be able to get their message out there because they’re audience are typically people who actually care. And when they get an audience that may not agree with them, I think they typically can’t help or get people interested in the subject because the material is usually presented in a non-relatable manner. This just further supports the divide between the fringe groups. Anyway, I think they were a cool group but I think their ability to engage people might be limited. Playing around in the coral was fun though. The best part of the coral watch was picking up black sea cucumbers and pretended to pee on Colt. I think Colt and I also got a couple “Cucumber-enises” in a few group photos. As Edd would say “quality humor.” I also learned that coral treat zooxanthella like organ replacements. When they lose them, they can only have them replaced with that exact same “strain” otherwise they will reject it. This makes coral recovery even that much more difficult. We also played cards for a very long time. Hanna, although was not dethroned from her pedestal of Egyptian Rat Screw, was deemed a cheater. She cheats to win. She hovers over the cards so it’s easier to slap. It was funny. The best part was when Sarit would put his fingers through a hole in the table and scare the living hell out of Hanna. Quality. Following that, Colt and I studied fishies vigorously till midnight. We did have another tangent side conversation about life and the craziness it possesses. I like talking with Colt because he knows things from experiences. I mean, he also knows his shit because he’s intelligent but he knows reality from his life and I can relate. I think that’s all and I know Trisha will be happy that I got this post through. Twas maybe a tad late.
